For Pharmacists: How to Build a Dream Career in Australia?

In India, every year more than 2.5 lacs students graduate with Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. “What next?” is the big (and rather unpleasant) question they face as the uncertainty looms in their face.

The biggest dilemma!

The question becomes even more dire when you look at the state of employment. You wonder what kind of salary is offered to the pharmacy graduates. After spending 4 years, the majority of pharmacy graduates start their jobs at 8k-15k per month. In today’s time, it is hard to imagine how one would make a decent living out of that salary.

Some go for jobs anyway, some for higher studies (and pursuing an M.Pharma doesn’t change the fate, it just delays it by another 2 years), and some end up opening up pharmacy shops for themselves. Well, not to mention some even rent their certificate to small time medical stores!

The question is what a pharmacy graduate should do to escape this tunnel and build a great career for himself. Well, the supply & demand equation in India may not be in favor of students graduating with a pharmacy degree, but it is certainly in high income countries. And one such country that offers a great career to pharmacy graduates.

According to Talent.com, the average starting salary of an entry level pharmacist in Australia is ~$87000/year (this is a whopping INR ~66 lacs!). But let’s not forget, living in Australia would also mean spending in Australian dollars. Yes, that is true! But even then, let’s say you’re able to save 20% of your income would be 13 lacs rupees of savings per year!

But the main question is, “how to become a pharmacist in Australia?” Well, the answer is simpler than you think! To become a practicing pharmacist in Australia, you first need to obtain a license.

Any graduate (or masters of PhD) in pharmacy can get a license by writing & clearing the KAPS (Knowledge Assessment of Pharmaceutical Science) exam. Once you clear the exam, you become eligible to apply for a visa/PR  and find a job in the field of pharmacy.  Also, if you have the right qualification, you can find a job in Australia a LOT more easily than you can in India.
